Finding an individual therapist who is skilled & experienced, who you feel comfortable with, who will challenge you, who you connect with, & who you can be real and honest with can sometimes seem like too big of a wish list.

But I want to challenge you a bit. Is that really too much to ask? Individual therapy is an incredibly personal, intimate, and potentially transformative experience and how can it truly be all that it is meant to be without those qualities in a therapist? Not every nice therapist that you connect with has the skills and experience you need and not every skilled therapist has a personality and style that you can connect with. All of the skill and training in the world will mean nothing if you can’t open up and be yourself. A therapy relationship is just that: a relationship! Which means that you simply are not going to connect and feel like your true self with everyone. AND THAT’S OK!! Sometimes finding the right therapist takes a little trial and error which of course is frustrating, but you owe it to yourself and all the potential that lies in the therapy process to find that good fit!
